69 Filipino songs that rocked my life in 2010s (Part 5)

01/30/2020 08:42:56 PM

It's a shame that it took me two months to finish this personal project. I initially had this in mind since late November and worked on the draft by mid-December. Anyway, here it goes...

Ten years ago, I tried coming up with a list of my favorite songs of the decade here in this blog. Unfortunately, I ended up shelving it as I got more busy with college studies and post-disaster recovery.

Fast-forward to present, I became a wanderer in the locality's live music scene – a  far cry from my shadows. And that has made me come up with the list.

For the fifth part of the series, we will tackle some of the hugot and swabe music that made the chill side of OPM flowed even further.

Inner Play was Apartel's explosive opener. And with the feel-good vibe of Motown Soul that backs Ely Buendia's falsetto-driven vocals, Better Off was its momentum pace-keeper and instant LSS material for some.

42. Sing (Rico Blanco, Parokya Ni Edgar)

Two singer-songwriters in one epic collaboration. As if the mash-up wasn't enough to shake things up in the mid-2000s.

43. Wag Mong Aminin (Rico Blanco)

2016 was such an emotional year. It's rainy afternoon, and Rico Blanco's tearjerker hits your speakers? Beautifully-written. What a songwriting god.

By the way, good luck with keeping your eyes dry.

Parokya Ni Edgar showed their 'Tito' side on one of their songs from the Pogi Years Old album. The 2016 edition of their usual 'tambay' song has reached its age and maturity. And on a personal level, it came perfectly at the time when I am about to let go of my nightlife and weekend hangouts.

What's what I have thought of writing this entry: the first version of All The Good Things should be included. However, hearing its updated version on UDD's new album made me changed my mind.

Sigurado was explosive for a full synth-driven alternative pop band that has grown for over a decade, becoming one of the instant crowd drawers in the process.

It has the groovy intro and the chill vibe. It may be the least of the intense songs they have from Love or Limbo, but Sheila and the Insects still have it – and those long-time true blue fans (not counting myself here) knew it.

47. 1-2-3 (Covert)

When you think about it, 1-2-3 is just like any typical Covert song -- the chill kind of acoustic folk-alternative mix, but in a different voice. It looks like Lui Gonzales' baptism of fire went out smoothly.

It was Maude's premier single off the album Pelota Court. The reversal-driven music video that backs up the slow flow of this alternative rock track that talks nothing but being hopelessly romantic.

49. Di Na Muli (Itchyworms)

It all started as a composition from Wally Alcola and Jazz Nicolas, and it ended up in two ways: the song being the winningest entry from the 2016 PhilPop Awards. It was a testament to how The Itchyworms were able to get another wind in their career; the song even had two separate reigns (2016 and 2018).

Di Na Muli was probably one of the nearly-last batches of 'hugot' songs that made it in the late 2010s.

No wonder why Sid and Aya picked this one up and scored a second chance in a popularity contest. No wonder why it won the songwriting festival. No wonder why the music video was so full of lights; that made me liked this song so much.

Before the unfortunate turn of events in 2016, a trio of bands spearheaded the local swabe music – with one of them named Jensen and the Flips.  They were then the new batch of 'pogi rock' acts who could rock the stage with their music and looks as its bonus.

JxF was a hot rod in the mid-2010s when they turn music bars into sauna levels; their songs became hot items on streaming and download platforms and even explosively engaging to their users through social media.

Dangerous has become the somewhat conyo side of modern-day's forbidden romance. The stripped-sounding, sultry alternative makes it up. Sila just met its English-spoken (albeit 'horny sounding') counterpart.
