PlayBack: Sheila and the Insects – Love or Limbo (album)

I'm probably one of the latecomers in the room here. Well, I already heard the name Sheila and the Insects during my college years when I randomly watched music videos at MTV. Despite that, I rarely listened to their music back then.

Just this past year, I learned that the Cebu-based alternative pop outfit had released new stuff – a new full-length album after a decade, called Love Or Limbo. The album showcases an updated version of the band's signature chops – the interweaving guitar hooks, the raw energetic rhythm section, and wry but playful lyrics! The time passed in between albums means that they have been missed by SATI fans of all possible levels (not counting yours truly... yet).

The 80s came back in such a way that the current “Titos” of the country would appreciate it the most. And probably, the new kids would join the party, too, since some of them do dig the names that resonate the mid-2000s OPM band explosion era.

Alarm was so damn high on adrenaline. It was a perfect kick-off to the album. The bass-and-drum pad-heavy intro made The Last Awkward Moment as one of my favorite tracks in the album too; it makes me wanna walk around the city on a gloomy morning and bump my head to every beat.

The Wave and Moonlove sounded like a bunch of wave-ish sentimental tracks. Escape is such a good closing song. Perhaps, give SATI crucial plus points for their track arrangements here.

Meanwhile, Always, though placed nearly last, is astonishingly good that makes you ask why this song wasn't their first single? It has a very sexy twist to their musical blend. Love in Fashion is another track that exemplifies the sensibilities of a pop-rock song.

All in all, Love Or Limbo proved how Sheila and the Insects has still got it as they join the current crop of Cebu-based bands that make noise aside from the emerging Mandaue Nights and Three Legged Men. Their New Wave-ish pop rock has regained traction once again after a very long time.

Love Or Limbo is the fifth studio album by Sheila and The Insects – their first since its previous release in 2005 (Flowerfish). Released by ICO Music Publishing, Inc. Stream the entire album on Spotify and Deezer. Love Or Limbo is also available by purchasing through the band's gigs and on CDs Atbp.

Sheila And The Insects is a pop-rock band based in Cebu City, Philippines. Its members are Orven Enoveso (vocals, guitars), Ian Zafra (guitar, backing vocals), Wesley Chongbian (bass guitar, backing vocals), and Vince Yap (drums and synth percussions).
