Newsletter: Toxic lead still persists in Metro Manila air amid fuel crisis and despite interventions

[THIS IS A PRESS RELEASE]

Danika Geronimo, Ateneo Research Communications

A hazy Metro Manila skyline reflects the persistence of airborne pollution in the Philippine capital. Ateneo de Manila University  researchers have recently found that toxic lead remains in the city’s air even decades after the phaseout of leaded gasoline, with major sources including local industrial activity, fossil fuel combustion, and legacy pollution. Much of this lead is carried aloft as particulate matter that can be deeply inhaled, posing particular risks to children and vulnerable individuals and communities. Counterintuitively, despite the ongoing fuel crisis and the over two decades since the global phaseout of leaded gasoline, toxic lead still lingers in Metro Manila’s air.

Newsletter: Satellite data shows NO2 concentration in Metro Manila down to pre-fire levels for two consecutive days

[THIS IS A PRESS RELEASE]

The Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) has done daily monitoring of satellite data since the Navotas landfill fire reportedly broke out on 10 April 2026. Coinciding with reports on Tuesday (28 April) that significant progress has been made in suppressing the fire, satellite data shows that nitrogen dioxide (NO2) concentration in Metro Manila has fallen below 6 April (pre-fire) levels for two consecutive days. Nitrogen dioxide is a pollutant produced from burning and is a component of smoke, and lower NO2 concentrations indicate a reduction in the volume of smoke emitted from the landfill fire.

StopOver: Mow's Bar

01/07/2019 07:18:15 PM

There's always a reason why Quezon City was called The City of The Stars, and we don't talk celebrities and their home networks situated within this area. The place has a lot of entertainment districts to offer – with some of them making lights by the dimmed hours of the night. QC has been the home to some of best gig venues in the metro such as Route 196, Sessions, and the iconic '70s Bistro.

However, one of the fast-rising (and evolving) music and hangout places in the metro is also situated at Quezon City – just nearby the popular Maginhawa eat strip. In fact, it's on the basement floor of the classic Kowloon House restaurant.

Flick Review: Metro Manila

10/18/2013 10:51:38 AM

Noir poetry is on the roll, and one of its biggest fruits was the movie known as “Metro Manila.” Nah, we should not be wondering on why the metropolitan has always been the subject of this type of artwork. Seems like poverty porn has always been a part of our cultural identity, eh?

It’s nice to notice though that Metro Manila was the British filmmaker Sean Ellis’ entry to the 86th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film. Yes, pang-Oscars nga ang pelikulang ito, considering that it can actually be a convergence of Filip

OVER-DEVELOPMENT KILLS?

As in, nag level-up din ba, baagy na talaga naming hindi maganda.
