Upcoming: Gee-Gee At Waterina

Artist Playground is set to open its fourth season with the company's first Original Pinoy Musical titled “GEE-GEE AT WATERINA” this August at their stage in Quezon City. The play will feature an all-new music composed by Jesse Lucas, choreography by Lezlie Dailisan, direction by Andrew de Real, and based on the story, book, and lyrics by J. Dennis C. Teodisio.


Roeder Camanag will reprise the role of Waterina, a ‘comfort gay’ during Japanese Occupation in the Philippines and one of Gee-gee’s Golden Gays. He is a two-time ALIW Best Stage Actor and has amassed multiple nominations at URIAN. He has performed in over 100 plays and musicals, and wears a lot of hats outside of being a thespian. Camanag is currently board member of the Gantimpala Theater Foundation and the artistic director of Artist Playground and the Valenzuela City Center for the Performing Arts.

On the other hand, Norman Penaflorida will essay the role of Gee-Gee, an entertainment actor, radio host and a councilor of Pasay City. Apart from being a theater actor, Penaflorida is a known event hos, production designer, entrepreneur, and event and image stylist of THE CLOSET.

And joining the ensemble are as follows: Bench Ortiz, Joseph Dela Cruz, Nel Gumalog, Romeo Palma Jr., and Sean Nolasco. 

Gee-Gee At Waterina was fist presented at the CCP Virgin Labfest in 2005, while a short version of this musical was produced for Cinemalaya a year later (2006). It tackles the life and times of two personalities measuring the worth of Waterina and the money that he got as a payment for the film rights to the life story of a soon-to-be-famous “comfort gay.”

This play was made by J. Dennis C. Teodisio, a known award-winning writer for television, cinema, print, advertising, ang stage. He's more known as one of the scholars of the 1st ABS-CBN2/Ricky Lee Course in Soap Writing, a part of the Star Cinema Concept Development Group, a fellow in the UP Likhaan and Iligan National Writers Workshop. He has staged 40 stage plays to his credit, including 11 for the Virgin Lab Fest, and garnered number of accolades for the likes of Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature, CineManila International Film Fetsival, and the Asian TV Awards to name a few.

Jesse Lucas, on the other hand, is a known hall-of-fame composer to numerous dance, television, theater and film programs. His works have won awards from different award-giving bodies like Gawad URIAN, FAMAS, Star Awards, Young Critics Circle, Metro Manila Film Festival, and Aliw Awards. He also made waves in the international scene when he bagged the trophy for the Best Music in the 2005 Screamfest International Film Festival for SIGAW (Scream). His outstanding works were showcased at the Cultural Center of the Philippines in a Triple Threat Concert Series called FULL RANGE – The Music of Jesse Lucas.

Known as the “King of Comedy Bars,” Andrew De Real is a writer, comedy director and entrepreneur known for Hay, bahay! (2016), Bossing & Ai (2017) and Stardancer (2007). His current projects include directing Sunday PinaSaya on GMA-7.

Complettng the Artistic Team of GEE-GEE AT WATERINA ANG MUSIKAL are the following: Andrew De Real (Director), Roeder CamaƱag (Artistic Director), Jesse Lucas (Composer /Musical Director), Leslie Dailisan  (Choreographer), Luis Galang (Lighting Designer) and Reynoso Mercado (Production Designer). 

The Production Team of GEE-GEE AT WATERINA ANG MUSIKAL is led by Kimberly Claire Somoza (Production Manager), Joselito “Toots” Tolentino (Publicist), Rowena Jarito (Stage Manager), Jayson Batoto (Deputy Stage Manager), Melanie Lao (Lay-out Designer), Jayson Santos and Kimberly Claire Somoza (Photographer), Christian Silang & Beaulah Mae Saycon (Assistant Stage Managers), Wenzel Kyne Fernandez (Assistant Lighting Designer) and Glenn Caspe (Spinner).

Meanwhile, GEEGEE AT WATERINA will be staged at 7:00 PM of August 18, 19, 25, and 26. It will be held at Arts Above, Artist Playground II, 112 West Venue Bldg., West Avenue, Quezon City.
