The Miami Heat was on the verge of breaking in to the 20+
game winning streak club, something that we last saw on the Houston Rockets
where Tracy McGrady and Yao Ming was anchoring the squad then.
Hmm… they’re actually the fourth team to do so with that
98-94 victory at Philadelphia, tying up with Oscar Robertson and Lew Alcindor’s
Milwaukee Bucks en route to its championship in 1971, the Rockets’ huge run at ’08
with 22 straight victories, and the Los Angeles Lakers with an improbable
33-game winning streak at 1973 led by still Alcindor but more known on his new
name then in Karrem Abdul-Jabbar.
Hey, they even surpassed the Chicago Bulls at 1995-96, which
won 18 straight despite rounding up an all-time high 72 wins in their yearly 82-contest
assignment.
The Los Angeles Clippers may have done much better only if
they did not lose on that New Year’s game.
But this does not give any sort of guarantee on their
championship defense yet, as only 2 teams on that same scenario managed to win
that Larry O’ Brien trophy at the end.
Yes, even the Houston Rockets did not saw it coming. It’s
like slapping the question “Who cares about the winning streak if they can’t
bag home the championship trophy anyway?” right between their eyes.
Now the question goes like this: How far will the Miami Heat
go on its so-far- a-huge-victorious-run? A lot of speculations arose on the
internet. At a poll made by Yahoo! Sports, almost half of the users replied
that they can surpass the Laker’s victorious remark.
To which I replied, that I doubt that it will happen yet. At
least they can overtake Houston for now with that next four-game-assignment on
the road which includes the Milwaukee Bucks, the Toronto Raptors, the Boston
Celtics and the Cleveland Cavaliers (but better be cautious at the third one
though, they lost the game there via double overtime). They’ll be fine if they
will end up 4-0 the rest of the way, at least for the meantime as they’ll have the
Chicago Bulls and the San Antonio Spurs as the remaining tough opponent for
March should everything will roll smooth for them.
But one thing is for sure; they can hit the straight Ws at
around 20s. And if they’ll go beyond 30s but still wound up second to the
Lakers (let’s say either 31 or 32), well… still a good accomplishment for them.
Just saying.
