It was the shot that seeming
neutralized what has been a bunch of negative hypes that surrounded
the league for the past season. Imagine one crowd-favorite team has
finally made it to the promised land – a bit earlier from what has
been expected from them.
Let's face it: despite steam-rolling
for almost at all times the past Governor's Cup, Ginebra has been the
laughing stock for so long; being tagged 'kangkong' as an equivalent
to the Dallas Mavericks of mid-2000s, Cleveland Cavaliers of the late
2000s, and Oklahoma City Thunder of the 2010s in the NBA – the
perennial chokers, especially during playoffs.
And as far as the history of
professional basketball has been concerned, Ginebra hadn't got a
title for eight years, or from the 2008 PBA Fiesta Conference, after
defeating the Air21 Express in a winner-take-all Game 7. Since then,
several teams in the NBA has established dominance from teams such as
Magnolia/San Miguel, Magnolia/BMeg/Star, and Talk 'N Text.
Just a lot of us thought this series
will have an always-dramatic conclusion by means of having a
sudden-death contest, we were wrong: Justin Brownlee catapulted
everything with a heave that was seemingly made out of desperation.
Talk about shot of a decade. This isn't
just a best highlight reel for the championship series alone, neither
for the entire Governor's Cup or the full 41st season.
Well, Ginebra deserved it after all.
Even if at times, I mocked their endings on Twitter, I personally
think they need this trophy so bad. And another loss could inflict
pain and mockery in them – something no one really wants to happen.
Finally, after numerous tries of shuffling stars, they had made the
right combo, to say the least. Save this for the aging Mark Caguioa
and Jayjay Helterbrand, and the star veteran LA Tenorio. Young
stalwarts from Japeth Aguilar to Scottie Thompson stepped up.
I just hope someone up there will not
be splitting their personnel soon, since they already snagged what is
theirs in the first place.
