For the past few weeks, I’ve been seeing WWE’s developmental program NXT very rarely. And the thing is, its special episodes (their counterpart to those main PPV events) were hardly shown on TV, which made me rely on the internet more than often.
Last Saturday afternoon, as I went to update and download my music files, I checked out NXT Takeover R Evolution on Dailymotion (by the way, I’ll post my take about its entirety later this week), and one of those heavyweight battles (relax, this had nothing to do with title matches) was a tag-team match between a former duo champs and a tandem of international superstars.
And perhaps the most surprising shit of them all is that guy named Finn Balor.
Balor, previously and popularly known as Prince Devitt, is a huge household name in international wrestling. He stands almost 6 foot tall, weighing close to 200 pounds, ages 33 years old, and a native of County Wicklow, Ireland.
He has won at least 12 titles in numerous wrestling promotions around the globe including New Japan Pro Wrestling and National Wrestling Alliance.
Okay, ‘nuff said about background. Now why is this kid rocking out the wrestling world right now, aside from Kevin Owen’s debut, the Women’s title match, and the NXT title bout itself?
Watch this three-and-a-half minuter.
That’s not just plain theatrics. Forget his typical jump-from-the-turnbuckle stunt. Forget the all-black-except-his name set-up on the entrance. He’s just different and made his own Takeover debut special as it is. Yes, it’s very fucking creative.
He just walked his talk. He proved the words he said during their promo. Now that’s being real right there.
Seeing this segment alone gave my nod for the battle itself, like “listen kids: it’s gonna be as hellish as shit in a short while.” And those “Holy Shit” crowd chants backed them up.
And true enough. Again, that’s just fucking awesome.
