Just two Fridays ago, yours truly was invited by one of the Marketing staff of the housing group Habitat for Humanity Philippines to be part of the event they called as the meetup of Online Champions held in their office at Makati City, Philippines.
I swing by at the meeting though it’s very late then as they introduced their online campaign for the victims of typhoon Haiyan (or much recognized here in our country as Yolanda).
At first, I could only recall HFH PH as a resounding name when it comes on disaster recovery programs. And still I have yet to know what their real purpose is all about. Well, they are non-profit organization that serves the countrymen in providing decent housings. And we mean decent housings or let’s call it “homes” because it’s part of our basic human rights at all.
Habitat for Humanity Philippines was the country’s main counterpart of the worldwide organization based in Georgia, USA. They have been doing this for about 25 years, or since their establishment in 1988.
How this project does works? It’s an advocacy for each and every online champion (which yours truly is now also part of to raise funds to help our countrymen (kababayan) whose been victimized by the one of the strongest typhoons ever to hit the world in the recent years.
Basically the target is at least 200 thousand pesos, good enough to build a single home which can house two families at maximum.
So far, the Habitat has engaged to already 2,000+ volunteers to rise about PhP 17 Million for the benefit of Yolanda survivors.
In addition Habitat for Humanity also collaborate with the government and private sectors to providing relief regardless if short term or long term projects were involved. Their aim for six years: reduce the total housing deficit in the country by 20%. And that’s a huge number to tell you, folks.
Why should everyone be an online champion? Well, unless you are an advocate since day one, but dealing with such things could only prove both online and offline that at least once in your life, you have made a difference in this world by helping the needy ones.
I know, there are other small acts out there which can define you as one. But in Habitat for Humanity’s online champion, you can make that act reach even further.
