Hari ng Tondo (Where I Am King) is one of the so many participating entries for the 2014 Cinemalaya Festival. Robert Arevalo starred in an action-themed-title-looking drama flick (relax, don't be decieved, it's really a family-saga centered drama film at all), alongside Rez Cortez, Rafa-Sigeoun Reyna, Liza Lorena, Cris Villonco, Gian Magdangal, Ali Sotto, Aiza Seguerra and with special participation from Ali Sotto, Eric Quizon and Audie Gemora. Directed by Carlitos Sigeuon-Reyna.

It plies on a struggling top corporate man who just can’t seemed to face what life lies on him now: a series of misfortunes in his company, forcing him to sell almost all of his properties—except his Tondo residence known as Alapaap.

In addition, he faced a total different environment: he’s not the king of his own kingdom anymore. Along the way, he realized his grandchildren were marred with miseries of their own. One doesn’t want to get married on a polygamous fiancé, while the other turned back on his father after getting fully blown from the latter’s un-appreciation for his son’s music.

Plus his old friend whose been serving as the head caretaker of Alapaap is stabbing him back (not literally).

The picture just showed many stories of harsh realities we faced in everyday life. How the rich perceives the poor and the other way around. On how we should not shy away from seeing the world and taking the challenges on it.

Some scenes were quite off, in terms of camera techniques and musical scoring, but it doesn’t really matter much considering that independent cinema used to have different styles or approaches as compared to the mainstream ones.

As Hari ng Tondo displayed many different stories, it also showcased the lessons one must adhere into it.

The most impressive about watching this type of movie is the fact that quality did really mattered the most. One of the signs that a motion picture was exceptionally good was when people applauded as the closing credits roll. Something I personally noticed after seeing the film last Saturday. The last time I witnessed such feedback was during the screening of Metro Manila in 2013.

The verdict: 9.4

  1. I think this good. Just the right amount of drama, comic relief and element of surprise in the mix. Not the usual film style of Carlitos Sigeuon-Reyna but it was still good. A lot better than Hustisya.
